Introduction to Land Stewardship

October 15, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 12:00 pm

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Aldo Leopold, the father of modern conservation, once stated, “Wildlife can be restored by the creative use of the same tools which have heretofore destroyed it — axe, cow, plow, match and gun.” Ultimately, these same tools can be used to manage landscapes for land stewardship outcomes.

This course will provide you with an understanding of the principles, processes and tools to effectively implement land-stewardship-focused management strategies on your operation. The focus will primarily be on applying Aldo Leopold’s five tools to meet stewardship goals and objectives.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
  • The Axe — How managing brush and invasive species can provide positive ecologic and economic outcomes.
  • The Cow — How grazing management can provide positive ecologic and economic outcomes.
  • The Plow — How planting the right species can provide positive ecologic and economic outcomes.
  • The Match — How prescribed fire can provide positive ecologic and economic outcomes.
  • The Gun — How managing wildlife populations can provide positive ecologic and economic outcomes.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
