The Goddard Center’s presentation of the MET Live in HD continues with Nico Muhly’s Marnie. The performance begins at 11:55am on Saturday, November 10th, live via satellite from New York. The doors will open at 10:55am. A light meal with wine and dessert, included in the cost of admission, will be served prior to the performance.

Nico Muhly (b. 1981) is one of the most notable composers working today, with a wide-ranging oeuvre encompassing ballet music, orchestral and chamber works, songs, solo piano pieces, film scores, and sacred and secular choral music. In the fall of 2013, his first Met-commissioned opera, Two Boys, had its U.S. premiere with the company. Marnie, Muhly’s second Met commission, is a gripping reimagining of Winston Graham’s 1961 novel.

The story is of a young woman who makes a living by embezzling from her employers, moving on, and changing her identity. She is eventually caught in the act by a young widower, Mark Rutland, who blackmails her into marriage. Two shocking events near the end of the story send the troubled woman to the brink of suicide and she must face trauma from her past, the root cause of her behavior. Marnie was the basis for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1964 suspense film of the same name.

Director Michael Mayer and his creative team have devised a fast-moving, cinematic world for this exhilarating story of denial and deceit. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sings the enigmatic Marnie, and baritone Christopher Maltman is the man who pursues her – with disastrous results. Robert Spano conducts.
