National Learn About Butterflies Day

As spring arrives, so does the appearance of bright colors painting the landscape and sky as butterflies soar about. Discover more about this vibrant, whimsical creature and their significance to the ecosystem during National Learn About Butterflies Day, Thursday, March 14, at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. The butterfly (hatalhposhik) holds a special significance to the Chickasaw people, and the cultural center is dedicated to the conservation efforts of these pollinators. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in horticulture activities like a plant and caterpillar cup giveaway as well as explore a butterfly tent where patrons can directly interact with dozens of butterflies. Enjoy butterfly-themed activities including make-and-take crafts, a matching game and scavenger hunt. A free screening of “Flight of the Butterflies” will take place at noon in the Anoli' Theater, followed by a free screening of “Journey of the Butterflies” at 3 p.m. The Aaimpa' Café will also have butterfly cookies for purchase. Be sure to visit the Butterfly Garden, a special oasis dedicated to these fluttering creatures of beauty and grace. This garden is filled with nectar-producing plants for butterflies to enjoy during their cultural center visit as they migrate between the northern United States and Mexico. In addition, the garden has large butterfly statues and educational panels to learn more about the monarch butterfly and conservation efforts to aid in restoring the population. Coinciding with the National Learn About Butterflies Day festivities, regular scheduled cultural activities and demonstrations will continue to occur across campus from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Leslie Mendelson @ The Goddard Center

All Music writes that Leslie evokes “1970s songwriter influences in the vein of Carole King and Carly Simon.” But what’s truly telling is that Leslie has also drawn the attention of The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir who recorded a duet with her on Roy Orbison’s standard, “Blue Bayou.” While no less than classic rock royalty, The Who invited her to open two shows at Madison Square Garden in 2019.
